Meet the Second-Grade Teachers
My name is Amber Beatty and I graduated from Arkansas Tech University in 2006. Oakland Heights has been my teaching home since 2007. I am a National Board Certified Teacher. I’ve discovered that my heart belongs in second-grade. Teaching my students that they are all capable of success is my number one goal.
My name is Ben Leavell. I graduated from Arkansas Tech University in 2006 with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. After working in retail for ten years, I decided to pursue a career in education. I returned to ATU and received a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education in 2014. My internship was completed at Oakland Heights, where I was also a substitute teacher for three long-term leaves and then worked as an instructional aide. I am proud to be a part of the Oakland Heights team. My goal for the students is to develop the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in whatever endeavors they choose to pursue in life.
My name is Marcia Monk. I received my bachelor’s degree in early childhood education in 1991 from the University of Kansas. I received my English as a Second Language (ESL) certification from Arkansas Tech University. I spent two years teaching preschool before working with children ages 0-5 in special education. I have been at Oakland Heights since 2013. I am a first and second-grade looping teacher which means I am allowed to watch students grow and learn for two years. It is a great privilege to invest in the students at Oakland Heights.
My name is Karla Powell. I graduated from the University of Oregon in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in education. After teaching in Oregon and Idaho, I moved to Arkansas in 2003 where I began teaching second-grade at Oakland Heights Elementary. Over the years, I loved seeing my wonderful classes of children grow into responsible, intelligent, and caring youth as they have continued their educational journeys through the Russellville school system.
My name is Jennifer Staten. I graduated from Arkansas Tech University in 2015 with my master’s degree in early childhood education. I have been teaching second-grade at Oakland since 2015, and it is a privilege to call Oakland my home. I want to help my students learn and reach their full potential!
