David Smith, a 9th-grade student at Russellville Junior High School, was honored at the RSD School Board meeting for exemplifying empathetic leadership.
For David, being an empathetic leader goes beyond simply being kind—it means setting a higher standard, leading with compassion, and serving as a role model for his peers. To him, leadership isn’t just about guiding others; it’s about understanding, supporting, and ensuring that every voice is heard.
David’s approach to leadership has been deeply influenced by his mother, whose kindness in even the most challenging situations has inspired him. “I developed my leadership skills by imitating my mother and how she works with others,” David shared. “She has taught me to always be kind to others even when it is hard.”
When faced with difficult situations, David takes a thoughtful approach. “I slow down and stop myself from making rash decisions. Then I make sure to go through all of my possible choices and think which one would best benefit me and the other people involved,” he explained.
David utilizes his leadership qualities by being an active member of the school community. He participates in football and basketball, serves as President of the Student Council, and holds the position of Parliamentarian for NJHS. Additionally, he is a proud member of the Whirlwinds Student Leaders, where he continues to develop his leadership skills and teamwork.
This recognition comes from the Profile of the RSD Graduate—a framework that defines the essential skills and qualities students develop by the time they graduate.
Great job, David! Thank you for being an excellent example for your fellow students!
